About Digi-Data

Digi-Data: Transformation within an ever-changing industry

The 1960’s era in the United States fueled significant transformation, both culturally and economically.  Many previously unimaginable achievements were made:  Man landed on the moon, Geosynchronous satellites revolutionized global communications, the first iteration of the internet (ARPAnet) was born, and in these early indicators of an impending data explosion, Digi-Data was founded in Columbia, Maryland, USA.

Digi-Data’s early entry into the storage solutions market made it possible for the company to strategically position itself as a reputable and reliable OEM provider.  In the early sixties, Digi-Data sold over 50,000 tape systems through OEM relationships with various companies like Compaq, HP, and Data General.

Digi-Data produced its first SCSI RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) controller for initial shipments in 1992.  It incorporated five key patents involving RAID technology and virtualization, which form the basis of the STORM (STorage On Redundant Modules) architecture.  Bringing a unique, clustered architecture to market that could scale in multiple dimensions (performance, capacity, availability and access), Digi-Data found their niche in several major accounts, including Disney, DLJ, ABC, FermiLabs, and World Bank just to name a few.

In the search for data intensive markets, Internet data storage and content delivery appeared to have complimentary storage requirements.  After a comprehensive search, Digi-Data acquired bigVAULT Corporation in February of 2006 based on a scaleable object store architecture, and various collaboration technologies.  This acquisition made it possible to extend the company’s reach into the consumer and small business arena, and enabled Digi-Data to provide secure, private, internet-resident storage for personal and business information.  bigVAULT, operated as the Vault Services division of Digi-Data, serves hundreds of thousands of users through large OEM providers as well as legacy customers using the service through the bigVAULT portal.

Continuing the Evolution: ‘Storage as a Utility’ model:

Leveraging the unequalled capacity and availability characteristics of the T-4000 Clustered RAID technology, and the internet storage management architecture, Digi-Data is poised to emerge as a leader in the Storage-as-a-Service arena.  With a comprehensive API to connect financial, data protection, or content management applications, partners can add the dimension of remote protection and anywhere-access to their list of features.  Our strategy is to continue building an ecosystem of partners that can benefit from our advanced internet storage infrastructure.

Our Locations

Digi-Data has three development sites and several field offices.  The storage division operates primarily out of the Columbia, Maryland office.  The electronic vaulting division is headquartered out of Commack, New York, where a team of software architects and developers continue to develop  and enhance our vaulting business.  An advanced engineering center also operates out of Broomfield, Colorado (between Denver and Boulder), focused on creating technologies and helping our partners to leverage our Intenet Storage Infrastructure.

As a company established at the historical apex of technological accomplishment, Digi-Data is now almost 50 years old.  As a privately held company, Digi-Data has adapted and thrived through many industry trends, supported substantial growth through periods of economic turmoil, and managed to transform its offerings to suit the needs of a more modern, ever-changing and demanding market.  The organization has truly leveraged its strengths to evolve with, and even ahead of, the industry in anticipation of increasingly high capacity storage needs.

Our vision

Digi-Data will be the steward of your digital assets, creating a 21st century storage environment with zero latency, no limits on capacity, and the ability to store your data for generations to come.
